As I navigate identity and try to overcome physical perception, I must accept what I have been taught to reject. Masks are meant to hide identity, or offer protection from the public in a pandemic, but perhaps they can also be empowering. I think back to being raised on white beauty standards, when my parents would tell me to pinch my nose to make it pointier. Now, any parts of me can grow and bloom as they please.
