All we are is memories 1

When researching the Barong Tagalog, the traditional Filipino garment my father wore to his wedding, I discovered the Spanish had designed it as a colonial tool. The shirt was worn untucked, supposedly for breathability and to display the intricate western botanical style embroidery, but it was also to advertise a less civilized look. There were no pockets to prevent stealing, and weapons could not be concealed under the translucent Pina fabric. Post-revolution, however, the Barong Tagalog has become a symbol of national pride. I am drawn to this idea of accepting all aspects of one’s history, and using this to form a stronger sense of identity.
In using fabric/yarn scraps from previous projects/samples/failures to stuff this quilt, I am demonstrating how I accumulate memories and experiences - many are seeked out, but some of the best come to me as they are meant to. Like tree rings, each is a different chapter being catalogued and compressed, all necessary for the whole.
