All we are is memories 2

2022 . 24"x15" .  Cotton and wool

In the face of mass production and industrialization, I question myself as a maker. I wish to embrace craft; to explore and highlight it. We cannot return to or recreate the past, but in what ways must it shape our moving forward? Rejection of the present environment might push us too far astray, so how might we work together in harmony? What memories do we take with us? What right do we have to extract and manipulate material from the land that feeds us? There is something surreal and beautiful, but also violent about felting. The fabrics in this piece have been broken down and merged in multiple ways. These fabrics were from my past mistakes. I accept them and allow them to move forward with me. Like the rings in a tree trunk cross-section, the memories we hold are catalogued and compressed over time, each necessary to the whole.
